Achieving a good ranking in the search engines

The first thing that you need to do in preparation for achieving a good search engine ranking is think about the keywords for the main page (index page) of your website.
(1) Spend some time brainstorming and make a list on paper of all the words you think that people may use to find your website.

(2) Once you have this list, go to the Google Keyword tool:
https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

(3) Take the keywords from your list and enter them into this tool. If your website has a potential worldwide market, choose "all countries and territories", otherwise, choose your target country.

(4) As you enter the keywords into the tool you will see many more suggestions from Google and you will see an estimate of the number of searches that your keyword phrase gets per month on Google.

(5) If you find that any of your phrases have only a small number of searches per month (e.g. a few hundred, or no data at all) then you should either remove them from your list or keep them aside as potential phrases for other pages of your website.

(6) Your aim is to find just one or two keyword phrases for the home page of your website. The number of searches that you need per month depends on your own market and requirements, but I recommend choosing a phrase that has more than 2000 searches each month.

(7) If you have a short list of phrases you should type them into Google.com with quotes around them and take a look at the total number of pages returned by Google. This is the number of competing websites and will give you an idea of the competition.

(8) Ideally you should choose a phrase that:
   - Fits the target market of your website
   - Has a good number of searches per month (>2000)
   - Has the least amount of competition

Take your time doing this as it is a very important part of SEO.
